Ashley Young's scintilating form in the Championship this season has earned the 20-year-old plenty of admirers in the footballing world, so his decision to sign a contract with Watford until 2010 is a massive boost for the Hornets.
The usual whispers that go hand-in-hand with any player of Young's calibre have linked the forward with the likes of Aston Villa and Arsenal in recent weeks, with Hornets fans fearing bids for the player during the January transfer window. However, Young has put supporters' minds at ease by signalling his intention to remain at the club for the forseeable future.
"I am delighted to have sorted out my future. For weeks there has been a lot
of speculation about who was interested in me and who was about to make an offer
for me during the transfer window," said the former Hornets trainee.
"I really believe we are going to achieve an awful lot over the next few
years."
Manager Adrian Boothroyd added: "Ashley is one of the most gifted footballers
I've worked with. The best is yet to come from him."
Young has already bagged an impressive 11 goals this campaign, and racked up countless assists for his team mates. He has spent almost two months on the sidelines recently following a combination of injury and suspension, but his return has added further weight to Watford's promotion chase. His decision to extend his existing deal by two years will only serve to increase the spirit and confidence at the club currently, and Young will now be looking to drive the Hornets on in their quest for promotion to the Premiership.
