Brighton & Hove Albion boss Mark McGhee has warned Watford what to expect if they sign Albert Jarrett.
The young winger has been handed a surprise opportunity to seal a move to the Premiership new boys after being invited for a trial by Adrian Boothroyd.
Jarrett played in The Hornets' friendly against Chievo Verona on Sunday and is waiting to learn if he will be offered a contract.
But Seagulls manager McGhee feels his Watford counterpart should take a close look at the 21-year-old's record over the past two seasons.
Since joining Brighton from Milton Keynes Dons, Jarrett has made just 25 appearances and undertaken loan spells at Stevenage and Swindon.
McGhee believes Boothroyd is in danger of being sucked in by the player's initial promise and has intimated signing the wide man would be a mistake.
"Watford are considering taking Albert on a free transfer and if they do it will be for the same reasons we took him on two years ago," McGhee told The Argus.
"When he first came here, for the first couple of weeks he looked as if he had something really different about him.
"He had explosive pace and could cross the ball with his left foot, but we haven't seen that since he signed.
"Watford have taken him up there and have seen the same things.
"It doesn't surprise me, but it will be in the longer term that we'll see whether, with what happened here, the penny will drop."
