These days your midfielders all have to work their hearts out, up and back, controlling midfield, so as soon as you include a Deulefeu type wide in a 442 then you create a weakness in midfield. Top 6 clubs have wide men that run up and back all game, but for us GD can't do a midfield role, this is why he's never settled properly in any team. For me he can only ever be a front player but he's not a striker.
This is where Flores needs to find a style of play and then play the best 11 for that style and formation. Hand on heart GD won't ever fully fit our needs, will sulk etc, and I forecast will leave within 12 months.
Anyway Flores has three key targets.... Tighten up defence and get FBs defending properly, re-energise the midfield, and find a forward combination that can put fear in oppo defences. (a la Deeney / ighalo) then he needs to get Sarr and Welbeck more in loved plus freshen up midfield.
There's the challenge.....
If it were me I start with making 2 lists:
List 1: My best technical players
List 2: My best players in terms of work rate and commitment to defending.
Anyone on both lists becomes a starter as long at there are no more than 3 at any one spot. Build a formation based on what that core can and can't do. Then sort it out over a few weeks of watching them in training and looking at film.
